Signs You Might Have Carpet Mold

The curse of mold is the worst to have in your home.

Mold needs moisture for growth and once it infests your house, it’s not an easy one to get rid of. Especially living spaces that are carpeted run a greater risk of mold infestations.

This is because the fibers soak up moisture and remain damp for long if they come in contact with water. Water seepage in walls and floors can be trapped under carpets. It’s difficult to identify mold on carpet because it can thrive on the layer underneath. Likewise closed rooms with little or no ventilation also provide breeding grounds for mold.

Eliminating mold from carpets is hard enough. These signs of mold infestation will detect the problem as soon as possible.

Musty Odors

If a carpeted room smells musty, it’s likely that mold has infested your home. The musty odor indicates dampness and moisture trapped in an unventilated environment.

However, it’s tricky to spot this smell if spend hours in the same room. Unless a visitor identifies the smell, you won’t be able to detect the onset of damage until it becomes apparent.

More Frequent Complaints Of Allergies

Mold poses serious health risks to you and your family’s medical wellbeing.

It can trigger several allergies; cause breathing problems; worsen asthma; and lead to bronchitis. If you notice such problems more often than usual, it’s a sign of mold infestation.

Since it’s commonly seen on walls, ceilings and floors, one might check those areas and rest assured that their house is free of mold. But inspecting carpets is essential for diagnosing the root cause of all health problems.

Damp Carpet

A day is enough for a damp carpet to develop mold. The problem could be traced back to a leaking pipe, dripping A/C condenser, or a floor damp from within. A plumbing accident is a very common cause of this, especially in basements where there is no outlet for ventilation.

A leakage underground can trigger mold development on carpets nearby as well. It’s important to spot the source of leakage and fix the plumbing damage. Carpets must be dried at the earliest to prevent mold growth.

Green/White/Black Marks On The Carpet

If your carpet is showing discoloration in some areas, it’s indicative of mold growth. The stains can become prominent in patches of white, green or black. Any signs of bleaching or discoloration must raise red flags. Beware of mold growth becoming larger underneath your carpet.

Under The Carpet

Mold either develops on the surface of a damp carpet or lurks in the moisture underneath. To check for hidden signs of mold, inspect the carpet from underneath and the floor where it’s laid. Any stains on the underside or wafts of musty odors are signs of an infestation.
